Publishers

Over the years, I’ve been able to share my articles and books with kids through a variety of publishers. Some projects were through book packagers, while others were developed with the publishers themselves. Below is a list of my direct publishing partners and the books we created.

My Guide to Space Exploration Series , Set of 8 books, 2024, K-Grade 2

From School Library Journal:

In this early elementary series, information is presented through the viewpoint of the person, place, or piece of technology featured in the title. The rover explains that it uses its cameras to help it navigate, while the space telescope explains that it sees clearly without atmosphere to blur the images. Short, direct sentences are paired with large photos to share information. Cartoon-style illustrations pose questions that encourage readers to think critically about what they have read. For instance, the space suit mentions that each of its layers has a job. Then the illustration asks readers, “Do you ever have to wear layers?” A glossary supports comprehension and offers pronunciation for unfamiliar words and an index helps to locate information. VERDICT A good choice for primary grades with its unique approach to a high-interest topic.

Inside U.S. Elections Series, Set of 6 books, 2024, Grades 4-7

From School Library Journal:

The presidential election process is broken down in these six volumes. Readers learn how campaigns are managed, the differences between the Democrat and Republican parties, and how debates can inform voters. Also presented are the roles of poll workers and watchers, the purpose of primaries in choosing candidates, and the workings of the Electoral College. Photographs relating to recent political campaigns are inserted to enhance the text. The informative texts are factual, objective, and current, with some photos from the 2024 election. The reads themselves are unexciting, but these titles will be particularly good for required election year reports. VERDICT These up-to-date volumes on the election process will be useful in this election year and selectors should consider.

How FACT Became FICTION Series, Set of 8 books, 2023, Grades 3-6

From School Library Journal:

American history is full of legendary figures and events, but are the stories we’ve heard all true? This series traces how the facts surrounding figures and events tied to American history have changed over time. For instance, many students may have heard of John Henry’s legendary contest with the steam powered drill. Author Bell read railroad records and other accounts of the time to trace the origins of this story. The same is done for each figure: Primary sources are compared to the popularized version of events in order to separate fact from fiction. Each book discusses why a particular part of history was retold in a specific way. Plentiful photos and illustrations support the text, as do image captions and sidebars on related topics. Activities encourage students to write their own ballad, pen a letter describing their feelings about a current event, and other projects to extend learning. VERDICT A great collection to stimulate critical thinking and historical analysis for middle grades.

National Park Adventures Series, Set of 8 books, 2023, Grades 3-6

From School Library Journal:

Categorized by topic rather than location, each of the books in this series, except for the introductory title, explores one characteristic of the national parks. Five parks are explored in each book, with three colorful, photo-filled pages dedicated to each. Topics such as wildlife, land formations, or historical monuments are detailed, bringing a unique perspective to each parks’ distinctive features. Students and travelers will both find these titles incredibly informative. Each title includes a table of contents, index, glossary, further resources and an activity. VERDICT A welcome addition to any collection, this fresh approach to the wonders of our national parks is both informative and beautiful.

Welcome to the Construction Site Series, Set of 8 books, 2018, K-Grade 2

From School Library Journal:

Amazing machines and the work they perform on construction sites worldwide are the focus of this “Level 1” guided reader series. Brief, easy-to-understand sentences stand out against a crisp white background, enabling emerging readers to focus on the text. On the verso page, colorful, up-close photos of the vehicles in action will captivate fans of the big machines; the images also provide visual context clues for accompanying critical thinking questions. A pronunciation guide is included within the glossary, which is especially useful for students as they build their vocabulary, as is the “Home and School Connection” feature found at the end of each volume, which caregivers can use to help reinforce literacy skills. VERDICT A well-designed series that will appeal to students, parents, and educators. Libraries can’t go wrong.
